Theatre art has evolved from ancient Greek tragedies and comedies, through Roman theatrical spectacles, to the medieval mystery plays and Renaissance dramas. This evolution reflects societal changes and technological advancements that have transformed the way stories are told on stage.

Contemporary theatre artists are experimenting with multi-disciplinary collaborations that merge performing arts with other forms like painting, opera, and digital platforms. In such a context, it’s no surprise that stars were born. They included Charles Macklin, John Philip Kemble, Sarah Siddons and, most famous of all, David Garrick. The British press carried reviews of these actors’ performances — as well as gossip about their private lives.

Hence the riot, in which infuriated locals smashed up the interior of the theatre mid-performance. Such unrest was a fairly frequent occurrence in 18th-century London — a sign of how seriously the public took its theatre.

Gentileschi’s Judith and Holofernes is perhaps one of the strongest representations of theatrical climax within Baroque painting. Utilizing Caravaggian tenebrism and chiaroscuro on the figures, Gentileschi implies a powerful sense of dramatic stage lighting, as well as urgent, swift movement. The scene itself has an almost Shakespearian vibe to its violence, bearing strong tonal resemblance to the assassination of Caesar. Indeed, the Apocryphal story of Judith beheading the Assyrian Holofernes was memorable for both its religious relevance and its purely compelling nature as a narrative, and Gentileschi communicates the drama of the entire ordeal in spades through the implied choreography of her actors, as well as her choice of environmental tone and design. One of the reasons this piece stands out is because it seems very literally “staged”, with the dark black background being strongly reminiscent of a black curtain in a theater. Tenebrism in painting is not so different from the backdrop of a stage, and, especially in this case, serves to create an almost identical effect.

As his biographer Thomas Davies wrote, after watching Garrick and Hannah Pritchard as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in 1768: ‘You heard what they spoke, but you learnt more from the agitation of mind displayed in their action and deportment… The wonderful expression of heartfelt horror, which Garrick felt when he showed his bloody hands, can only be conceived by those who saw him.’

So if you want to explore this industry, the best way to start is to explore a style or a period, create your own body of work and share it with the world. Then keep an eye for opportunities. You never know when something that looks small can actually change your entire career.

Robert Bernard, Martin T. Charles, and Annie Atkins have each spoken about the importance of their work for the actors. They deliver their most compelling and believable performances when they have real props to look at, hold, and interact with. Graphic designers for film and television may not be the most lauded names in the credits, but they’re among the most important.

“A lot of film studios are difficult to reach places, but if you can get a couple of work experience placements under your belt, demonstrate that you’re willing and able – make yourself indispensable. It might be that you have to spend a week sticking labels on boxes in a small part of the studio, but if you’ve got your eyes and ears open, you will learn so much. And, like Eduardo, you might just be in the right place at the right time.”

The lead graphic designer on this movie, Annie Atkins, was responsible for creating the immaculate design for this movie. From newspaper clippings to keychain designs, from patterns on the carpet to patterns on the wallpaper, and from maps to signboards, all of it (and more) was imagined and created by Atkins. The movie received critical acclaim for its flawless art of graphic design and is hailed as a ‘typographical treat’ by reviewers, to date.
